His father, Neil, had been rough on him from the start, but Billy could put up with it since his mother, Lori, showed him nothing but love. When she left and wouldn't take him with her, that's when Billy started to lash out. His father's beatings became worse, which he transferred into violence towards others. He was 12 when the Mayfield's entered his life.

When the dust settled after the battle at Starcourt, Billy's body couldn't be found. Vecna took him back to the Upside Down, knowing that he now holds too much information after having his mind connected to the Hive. He's a liability, but could possibly still prove useful in the future. Due to being possessed by the Mind Flayer and having its strengths still coursing through him when he was impaled, the mortal wound was able to heal. It wasn't easy, though, being a slow process since his superhuman abilities were slowly draining out of his system.LIFE IN THE UPSIDE DOWN. Once finding cover in the Upside Down, Billy hunkered down and went through the painful process of healing that took a couple of weeks. After that, he spent months (the number depends on the verse) surviving anyway he could. Raiding nearby houses, he found guns and supplies. Run-ins with the local wildlife taught him more about the creatures than he ever wanted to know. However, he's cunning and has a lot of built up anger that he can now release as much as he wants. If he wasn't so alone and terrified of being possessed again, one might think it's a dream come true for him. He likes to imagine himself as a Road Warrior type, total badass. But the moment he hears a roar, he hits the deck and prays for whatever it is to be gone. Most of the time he stays hidden away, trying to come to terms with all the bloodshed on his hands.THE NEW NORMAL. When Vecna begins opening more gates, Billy finds one while out scouting for supplies. Going home looked way too easy and he often wonders if he doesn't deserve it. He still took the chance, returning to Hawkins and pulling a Will Byers by coming back from the dead. He passed it off as having run away to California for 8 months.
Finally free of his dad, he saw no reason to reach out to him. Billy decides to stay in Hawkins for the time being. He gets a small, one room Air Stream and parks it next to his stepmom's trailer and lives there.
With no reason to finish out school, he instead works odd jobs here and there, but has a difficult time keeping them down. The PTSD of everything often has his mind wandering, making him appear like a slacker.
If he's not working, you can find him fixing up his Camaro or camped out in the hospital to keep an eye on Max.
Though he tries to live better, to prove to himself that he's not the villain the Mind Flayer turned him into, he still often relies on his anger and hate to hide the pain that's inside. He's still a piece of shit, but now he's a piece of shit that wants something better.
